Hull Minster: The Church of Old Town

Standing near the center of Hull's Old Town stands a shining monstrous brick parish church known now as Hull Parish, a colossal Anglican Minster.

However, it has not always been Hull Minster. First constructed over 700 years ago, the medieval building was once known as the Holy Trinity Church, built under King Edward I of England after the Wyke of Hull, an abbey of the Monks of Meaux Abbey that previously owned the land, bought the land in order to establish the city of Kingston-Upon-Hull. The exact history of the building is very limited in record, but it is known that a license for the church's cemetery was granted in 1301 by Archbishop Corbridge. William Wilberforce, leader in stopping the slave trade in England was baptized here just after his birth in 1759.

It is considered one of the finest examples of late gothic medieval architecture in all of England with it's spacious and logical architecture, and immaculate early use of red brick. Architecture enthusiasts and tourists alike often travel from all over to see it's beauty first-hand.

The Church throughout it's long history has experienced a series of maintenance repairs to save it's architectural beauties as much as possible. In 2014, plans to reorder the church in phases to create an outstanding venue for performances, exhibitions, banquets, a visitor destination, and a place where those in need of help can find assistance were revealed and slated to cost 4.5 million pounds. The first phase was completed by 2017 to be ready for Hull's role as UK City of Culture. In 2019 it received additional funding through a grant from Highways England for 3.9 million pounds to create a visitor center, cafe, and exhibition spaces. An education and learning center, disabled access, and a community fruit and vegetable garden have also been proposed.

The church was given the status of Minster on May 13th, 2017 by Archbishop of York, John Sentamu. The ceremony involved the archbishop coming to the church in a flotilla of boats with a lantern lit at Hessle's All Saint's Church to rededicate the Holy Trinity Church as Hull Minster.

We hope you will stay with us when you come to see the Minster!
