How to Have a Barbecue/Summer Party in Hull

Hull like any city has a lot of buildings and very little grass. Many of us including myself live in terrace homes, crammed between others with which we share one wall each and a small sectioned off back yard often paved over. Sometimes you might be lucky and have a slight rock covered front lawn, but in general there’s not a lot of space to work with when you want to get all your friends and family over for a summer time bash. My house (an HMO) recently attempted a barbecue for one of my housemates‘ birthday and I think it’s safe to say we learned from the experience.

Heres a few things I picked up.

  1. Keep the smoke controlled or skip the barbecue. We used a charcoal grill in our small back plot and it got real smoky real fast. As we struggled to figure out how to properly light the charcoal grill that my housemate won from a work competition to cook some burgers and sausages, smoke began to accumulate real fast. Keep the lid closed and the smoke coming through a recently cleaned vent or just do propane. Charcoal grilling really isn’t worth it. This also applies to any firepits. Skip them if you have a tight space unless you want a consistent face full of smoke.

  2. Let your neighbors know ahead of time. Good relationships with your neighbors can make or break a living situation. They might not be happy to suddenly have loud music blasting from your yard or house during their tea. Keep your volumes adjusted with them in mind. Owning a Bluetooth speaker can go a long way and will anger way less neighbors than a wall mounted TV blasting the Backstreet Boys.

  3. You CAN have too much food. Food goes bad fast. Especially once cooked and left in the sun. Know your guests and their diets ahead of time to be able to purchase enough food that you don’t run out if someone is feeling extra hungry, but not too much that two thirds of it doesn’t get eaten. If people are done after one burger, maybe skip the sausages.. or the chicken… or the steak. Keep it to two main options and snacks.

All this said, the most important bit of advice I can give you however is to have fun. Hang out and have a good time and maybe a few drinks with the best people in your life under a nice summer sun.

Enjoy your time in Hull.
