Awesome Places in Hull for Sociable Young Adults

I've been in Hull for about a year now and the UK for about 2. However, as sort of a geek who plays video games and doing this job from home, it's been hard to socialize. In fact from the moment I graduated from school finding like-minded individuals has been a challenge. We grow up going to school from the moment we can speak. We see the same people every day and have a massive selection of people our age to choose from to befriend. When you become an adult, it can sort of feel like pubs and work are your only options. Fortunately in Hull that's not the case.

Obviously further education can extend your time with like minded people your age, but it can be a bit confusing. I went into The Warren today hoping to join a local LGBTQ+ youth group and ended up getting extremely helpful advice about my specific complicated situation with schooling and how I can potentially move into higher education as well as running through a mock interview with me for an upcoming interview. The Warren Youth Project is a non-profit organization for people ages 14-25 that hosts an insane variety of activities and exists to help young people develop skills, receive support, counselling, or give them the skills and tools to create. They offer workshops on photography, game design, music, etc. and if none of that seems interesting to you, you can always just come by and chill! Immediately upon finishing my tour around the place I was greeted by a few people my age and we ended up spending the entire afternoon together. It just happens. I highly recommend checking them out, I'll be back there multiple times a week.

Another great place is Geek Retreat! Offering a variety of free or cheap activities such as Yu-Gi-Oh or Magic: The Gathering tournaments, this franchise shop is a great place to come chill. I'd gone in a few times and enjoyed some solid cheeseburgers and delicious milkshakes with a friend over some board games, but yesterday went for their weekly Dungeons and Dragons session. It was a lot of fun and we ended up agreeing to create a group chat to continue next week! Playing games, reading comics, etc. is all free and is just about being respectful. At the end of the day they are a business, so maybe buy a milkshake if you can while you meet some fellow geeks but it's not required. They're always ready to have an intellectual back and forth about the ancient history of the Jawas.

So if you're feeling lonely and antsy, maybe consider one of these places! More details can be found at thewarren.org and the Geek Retreat Facebook page respectively.

I hope to see you out in Hull soon!
